StreamSleep Privacy Policy

Last updated: 7 August 2026

This policy explains what information StreamSleep collects, why, and what you can do about it. It’s written in plain language on purpose.

The short version

StreamSleep detects when you fall asleep and pauses your media. Detection happens on your device — your sleep and media data stays on your phone unless you choose to connect Health Connect or a smart TV. We don’t sell your data, we don’t show ads, and we don’t share anything with data brokers or advertising networks. The only outside services involved are Google Play (for purchases) and Firebase (for crash reports and basic usage analytics), both described below.

Who this covers

This policy applies to the StreamSleep Android app and its optional Wear OS companion app, published by Stephen Butterly.

Information we collect

You never create an account or give us your name, email, or any personal identifier directly — StreamSleep has no sign-up.

Stored on your device only:

None of the above ever leaves your device unless you explicitly connect Health Connect (which shares data with other apps you’ve authorised, per Android’s own Health Connect permissions) or pair a smart TV on your own Wi-Fi network (a direct, local connection — nothing routes through us).

Sent to third-party services:

Permissions we use, and why

Android requires apps to explain sensitive permissions clearly. Here’s every one StreamSleep asks for and exactly what it’s for:

Permission Why StreamSleep needs it
Notification access To see which media apps are playing and send them a pause command. StreamSleep does not read, store, or transmit the contents of your other notifications.
Physical activity (Activity Recognition) Powers on-device sleep detection using your phone’s built-in classifier — no location data is used or collected.
Body sensors (watch app only) Reads heart rate on a paired Wear OS watch for faster, more accurate sleep detection. Processed on the watch and phone only.
Health Connect (optional) If you connect it, lets StreamSleep read sleep sessions logged by your watch or other health apps, shown in your Dashboard.
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) Shows the “monitoring active” status and the “Still awake?” check before pausing.
Foreground service / battery optimisation exemption Keeps sleep monitoring running reliably overnight.
Wi-Fi / network access Only used for the optional Premium TV control feature, to find and send pause commands to smart TVs on your own local network.

What we don’t do

Your choices

Children’s privacy

StreamSleep is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13 (or the relevant minimum age in your country). If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we’ll remove it.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect information StreamSleep handles, but no method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we’ll update the date at the top and post the revised version at this same address.
